Children born outside of Canada to Canadian parents are eligible Canadian citizens

Are you a Canadian Citizen, but your child was born outside of Canada? Here’s good news for you. As per IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada), Canadian citizens can pass on citizenship to their first-generation children born outside of Canada. Thus, the children born overseas, but have one of the parents as a Canadian citizen, are eligible to claim their citizenship in Canada.

To avail Canadian Citizen, the candidate needs to apply for a Proof of Citizenship or Canadian Citizenship Certificate. Now, understand the need or benefits of acquiring this citizenship. Getting Canadian citizenship will make the child eligible to enjoy the benefits and privileges attached to being a Canadian. Every year thousands of immigrants successfully manage to get their citizenship in Canada.

Privileges of being a Canadian

  • Opportunity to vote
  • Join Politics
  • Better job prospects in Canada
  • Canadian passport makes you eligible to travel to many countries without a visa,
  • It simplifies the process of getting a travel visa to many countries
  • As per Canadian law, dual or multiple citizenship is allowed.
  • Eligible to avail of Canada’s universal healthcare coverage

Process of getting citizenship

  • Submission of the birth certificate has the name of the parent, issued by the governing authority of the original country of birth
  • In case the birth certificate does not carry the parent’s name, then the parent’s birth certificate or birth records confirming the parent’s name at the time of birth need to be submitted
  • Submitting the proof (birth certificate, citizenship document, or other proofs) that shows that one of the parents was a Canadian citizen at the time of the child’s birth
  • Also, submit your photographs, along with identity proof like a passport

Note: All the documents submitted should be must be clear, readable and in color.

IRCC will share the ‘acknowledgment of receiving the application’ once the complete application is submitted. However, the application will be sent back in case it is incomplete.

Once IRCC is completely satisfied with the application, the candidate will receive the citizenship certificate.
